Siticibo and Cuki Save the Food Project: 500.000 pieces of not consumed food redistributed to people in need

Great success for the Siticibo initiative in cooperation with Cuki Save the Food Project: from November 2011 more than 500,000 pieces of not consumed food coming from catering companies and fresh food from the shelves of retailers (as reported in real time on www.cukisavethefood.it) were recovered and redistributed to charitable organizations committed to deliver meals to people in need. Cuki Save the Food is the long-term charity project promoted by Cuki to support the activities of the Siticibo Program promoted by Banco Alimentare Foundation that for years, with its volunteers and a complex logistic network, recovers and redistributes food not consumed from catering companies and big retailers. Cuki Save the Food supports Siticibo activities with a financial contribution to cover part of the logistic costs and especially with the donation of aluminum trays, which are essential to preserve and transport the food in a healthy and safety way, and thermic boxes to maintain the cold chain in the transport of fresh and packaged foods such as fruit and vegetables from big retailers shelves. Cuki Save the Food allowed Siticibo to extend its activities to new realities in Abruzzo, Campania, Lombardy, Piedmont, Puglia, Sicily and Umbria, where the universities, hospitals, private companies and military stations involved have contributed to the important result of saving 500.000 portions from the waste, creating a strong impetus in the surplus recovery of fresh food from the supermarket chains. Siticibo and Cuki Save the Food play an important role matching the demand for food of the poor with the surplus of perishable food from canteens and supermarkets. And in the current economic situation, in which the number of people at risk of poverty is increasing and the charitable organizations involved are struggling to meet the needs of the poor, the excess food at risk of waste is a key resource. The next goal is to increase the activity of Siticibo collection in Rome, where, in partnership with Roma Capitale, operates as Rete Alimentare Cittadina Siticibo. The call is addressed to public and private companies and catering enterprises in the Rome urban area to hand the excess food to the Rete Alimentare Cittadina Siticibo, managed by the Banco Alimentare of Lazio Onlus; to stimulate the adherence to its project, Cuki Save the Food makes available to the companies selected by the Banco Alimentare an annual supply of aluminum trays and provides charitable structures an allocation of thermic boxes sufficient to manage their daily collection.
